I decided to try dozens of dishwasher detergents WITHOUT these harmful chemicals. Here are the 5 best!

Nellie’s Dish Cubes came in second place.
We love that this dishwasher detergent is made without harsh ingredients like chlorine bleach, synthetic dyes, and other phthalates or parabens.
These dish cubes are a new way to do dishes, and are the cutest little squares. They are a little pricey on a price per load but it was so fun to try this new type.
The cleaning power and less toxic ingredients landed Nellie’s at #2.

3. Molly’s Suds
Molly’s Suds comes in at #3! These pods are made without harsh chemicals.
We love that this dishwasher detergent is made without harsh ingredients like chlorine bleach, synthetic dyes, and other phthalates or parabens. Instead, Molly’s Suds uses plant-based surfactants & naturally-occurring enzymes. It is a little messy with the powder plume.

4. Seventh Generation
After hearing about Seventh Generation’s popularity among the “clean living” crowd, I was excited to try it. I am, however, ranking it at #4.
It definitely cleaned my dishes and didn’t leave any residue, but I just can’t get past the liquid format. Liquid detergent is just too messy–it gets everywhere, is way too sticky, and you never know if you’re pouring too much or too little.
The positive is that there are no harmful chemicals and the ingredients are plant based!
I just personally don’t like to deal with a heavy plastic jug of diluted liquid.
Some people do swear by it, though.

5. Dirty Labs
Finally, coming in at #5 is Dirty Labs Dishwasher Detergent.
The ingredients are natural and work great! I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about Dirty Labs’ cleaning power.
The biggest negative for me was just the powder format. Unlike the pods, this detergent comes in loose powder that definitely gets everywhere and is hard to measure.
Although powder is definitely a step above liquid, the high price is what brought Dirty Labs to #5.
Being the most expensive for less detergent, I couldn’t justify the price when there were better options.

I hear you–I was skeptical at first too! And I’ll be honest, not ALL “clean” dishwasher detergents actually cut through grease and tough residue. That’s why I only use Clean People dishwasher pods in my home now! They get my dishes super clean without the toxic chemicals.

Great question! The big three ingredients to avoid are: Alcohol Ethoxylates, Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach), and 1,4-Dioxane (this causes cancer, too).
I definitely recommend Clean People’s Dishwasher Detergent pods–they’re completely free from all those gut issue-causing chemicals!
