Sydney residents have taken to social media to expose how an eastern suburbs pub has allegedly been torn apart by its new owners without the appropriate approvals. A tools down order was issued by Woollahra Council back in February for work to cease on The Unicorn Hotel in Paddington. The cease order was made after it was discovered that the builders allegedly did not have the heritage approvals required to carry out the extensive demolitions they were conducting on the site. It has been reported by Nine that all of the existing floors, the internal walls and stairs and the entire roof of the beloved pub had been demolished before the council had a chance to approve or deny the new owner’s development application. Images have since emerged via social media of the site behind the plywood, revealing the courtyard’s transformation. The Unicorn Hotel, Paddington. Picture: Facebook Inside, the pub has been torn asunder. Picture: Facebook Established in 1874, the pub was acquired by hospitality group JDA Collective in April 2024. The new owners began refurbishing the site soon after, with plans announced to replace the bathrooms, kitchen, main bar and more. A pub spokesperson told media the works were started “with the goal of maintaining its unique character”. Locals have taken to social media calling for answers from both the new owners and the council. “While the council was too busy putting in bike lanes they didn’t see in plain sight a pub getting worked on ?” [sic] one user commented on the photos. Another claimed the owners should be responsible for restoring the pub to its original condition. “Such a shame,” one commenter said, “I worked there in the 80s”. Picture: Facebook A JDA Collective spokesperson told media demolitions were undertaken “in consultation” with council. “During the renovation process, extensive engineering analysis revealed that the building’s internal structure had been significantly compromised by concrete cancer, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of the heritage building and its facade,” the spokesperson said. “Our intention is, and always has been, to rebuild in line with current development approvals, and we remain committed to maintaining The Unicorn’s character while delivering a considered update.” Locals want the Paddington pub restored to its former glory. Picture: John Appleyard Premier Chris Minns held a press conference from the pub in early 2024. Picture: NCA NewsWire/Nikki Short Woollahra councillor Harriet Price told media the internal demolitions had been undertaken “in advance of proper assessment”. “The opportunity to salvage and facilitate the reuse of internal heritage fabric to create a thorough archival record of the interiors may have been lost,” she said. Some commentators were optimistic about the renovations. A Facebook user commenting on the photos of the pub demolition said: “Looks like a great renovation and seriously needed. Looking forward to a beer there when it re-opens.” MORE: Share TOPICS Pub Sydney Like us on Facebook to stay up to date with commercial property news: Read More Related Articles Leasing Barbeques Galore axed, hundreds lose jobs Leasing Retail stores abandoned over Australia’s relaxed laws Buying & Selling Chicken wars reignite as Chargrill Charlie’s corner shop hits the market Related Articles Leasing Barbeques Galore axed, hundreds lose jobs Leasing Retail stores abandoned over Australia’s relaxed laws Buying & Selling Chicken wars reignite as Chargrill Charlie’s corner shop hits the market COMMERCIAL NEWS Latest News Market Insights Investing Buying & Selling Leasing Small Business Podcast Australia’s leading destination for commercial property news, including information on buying, leasing, investing, small business and market insights.
