May arrivals look fairly robust and although visitors who flew in dropped by 52%, people have been driving in from the wider region Copyright: IMAGO/Naushad via Reuters Connect Visits down 70% in April Flights delayed or cancelled Lower prices for hotel rooms Newly released tourism data shows a marked slowdown in Qatars visitor economy during the Iran conflict , with international arrivals dropping 80 percent in March, luxury hotels only a third full and rates at their lowest since the pandemic. International visitor numbers fell from 351,000 in March 2025 to 63,000 in March this year, according to data from Qatar Tourism. For April, visits were down 70 percent year on year, and May was down by a quarter. AGBI has contacted Qatar Tourism for comment. Between February 28 and April 6, Dohas Hamad International Airport delayed or cancelled 80 percent of flights, according to aviation analytics company Cirium. Looking ahead, national carrier Qatar Airways has 19 percent fewer flights scheduled in June compared with a year earlier, AGBI reported last week . Although May arrivals look fairly robust, visitors who flew in dropped by 52 percent, with most people driving in from the wider region. Hotel occupancy fell to 47 percent in March and 44 percent in April, the worst results for those two months since records began in 2019. Five-star hotels filled only a third of their rooms in the two months, again the worst performance on record, even including the period during the Covid pandemic. Prices across the countrys 42,000 hotel rooms also declined. Average daily rates were QAR345 and QAR358 ($94 and $98) in March and April respectively, only two riyals higher than March during Covid-19 and 20 riyals above April that year. Officials have said in the past that Qatar is not chasing visitor numbers: Im not looking to drive the [visitor] numbers higher, rather [to have] people staying longer and increase the quality of visitors, said the chairman of Qatar Tourism, Saad bin Ali Al Kharji, at the Qatar Economic Forum last year. While not the lowest on record, prices at five-star hotels in March and April were comparable to rates in 2019, at about $150 a night. At the time of writing, Qatar is the only GCC country to update its official channels for tourism data, providing an insight into the impact of the regional war on travel. Hotel operators and restaurateurs in Dubai have spoken of their challenges , but the emirate has not published tourism figures since January. Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait have yet to release any tourism data since the start of the war .
