8 Iconic Dresses That Shaped Pop Culture for Years To Come
Advertisements
Gone with the Wind
This particular green dress was made to look like it was improvised and made in a hurry. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know that Scarlett O’Hara supposedly had nothing to wear and decided to make a dress out of old velvet curtains. A genius plan, we must admit, and the result is very striking and memorable.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Marilyn Monroe can make any dress look great, but this pink number she wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is particularly memorable. This dress is truly unique. It’s strapless, yet floor-length, it’s made of bright pink satin, features a very impressive bow at the back, and comes with a set of matching pink gloves. And surprisingly enough, this wasn’t originally going to be the dress Marilyn wears in the movie, it’s a backup dress that was made in 2 days flat when the original one wasn’t approved by the studio.
Ziegfeld Girl
If you haven’t seen the movie – do yourself a favor and watch it. If not for the plot, then just to see the gorgeous dress in action. The stars that adore the dress and seamlessly transition into accessories are absolutely stunning. If you ever want to feel like the star of the show, wear a dress like this.
Titanic
This gorgeous dress Rose wore in Titanic is forever embedded in our memory as the dress she almost jumps the ship in. On one hand, we must congratulate her on a great choice of dress to die in, on the other hand, it would’ve been a shame to ruin such a pretty dress. Thankfully, Jack was there to convince her that she shouldn’t jump.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Some of us are hardcore Harry Potter fans and therefore aren’t sure about the Lion, or The Witch, but the Wardrobe is indeed impressive. Just look at this dress. It was made to covey the icy nature of the character in the movie and mimic the color of ice. This dress was actually very well thought out and was made using three layers of materials: velvet (for structure), wool, and silk (for texture) and the top layer was lace (for that majestic elegance).
Snow White and the Huntsman
Fairy tale dresses are always memorable, but we really think that the costumes in Snow White and the Huntsman take the cake. This dress worn by the Wicked Witch was especially memorable thanks to its unusual structural elements around the shoulders. The designer, Colleen Antwood, even admitted in the interview that dresses worn by the Wicked Witch in this movie were the most challenging to make because they had to be stunning and elegant, yet convey the character’s wicked nature and the transformation she goes through.
Mirror, Mirror
If you’re gonna play Snow White, you gotta wear a poofy dress, and that’s exactly what Lily Collins got to do in the movie Mirror, Mirror . This beautiful dress, with a pink bodice, green sleeves, and a massive yellow skirt adorned with floral embroidery is as fairy-tale as you can get. But wearing it is not easy as it’s made from about 30 meters of fabric, features a corset and the skirt has a wireframe to make it more voluminous. And then there’s the cape she wore on top. Sounds like wearing it was a workout, but the result is truly worth it.
Beauty and the Beast
When you think of Belle from Beauty and the Beast you probably think of her either in her blue apron dress or in the iconic yellow dress from the animated movie, but those are not the dresses we want to focus on, they’re way too predictable. While both of those look great in the remake, it’s the floral dress Belle wears for the wedding that we want to talk about. It’s a brave and risky choice that no one expected, but we love it. The dress looks more modern than the yellow one we’re used to, but the painted flowers and the floral details in the back bring back that fairy-tale charm.
