Lindsey Vonn’s father says he hopes the terrifying crash that left his daughter with a broken leg at the Winter Olympics marks the final chapter of her legendary skiing career.
The American icon, now 41, shocked the sport simply by making it to the start gate of the women’s downhill on Sunday — just days after rupturing her left ACL in a violent training crash ahead of the Games. Against all odds, Vonn not only trained but finished third-fastest in final practice, ultimately deciding to race in Cortina despite the severity of her injuries.
That gamble proved costly.
A Run That Ended In Disaster
Just 13 seconds into her downhill run, Vonn lost control after rounding the second turn and was launched into a brutal fall. The impact left her writhing on the snow before medical teams rushed to her side.
She was later airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Treviso , where she underwent surgery to stabilize her injured leg. Officials later confirmed she was in stable condition, but the extent of the damage has cast serious doubt over her future in the sport.
“This Is The End,” Says Her Father
Speaking to Associated Press , Vonn’s father, Alan Kildow, did not mince words when asked about what comes next.
“She’s 41 years old and this is the end of her career,” Kildow said. “There will be no more ski races for Lindsey Vonn, as long as I have anything to say about it.”
A former skier himself who introduced his daughter to racing, Kildow believes the Olympic crash should serve as a final warning after years of pushing her body beyond its limits.

Inside Vonn’s Hospital Recovery
Kildow and the rest of Vonn’s family — including her brother and two sisters — have remained by her side in Italy since the accident. He revealed that he slept overnight in her hospital room following surgery and emphasized that she has not been left alone at any point during her recovery.
“She has somebody with her — or multiple people with her — at all times,” he said. “We’ll have people here as long as she’s here.”
While declining to go into detail about the specific nature of her injuries, Kildow did speak about how his daughter is handling the situation emotionally.
“She’s a very strong individual,” he said. “She knows physical pain and understands the circumstances she finds herself in. She’s handling it better than I expected. She’s a very, very strong person.”

Watching From The Finish Area
Kildow and the rest of the family witnessed the crash unfold from the finish area, a moment he described as both shocking and deeply traumatic.
“First, the shock and the horror of the whole thing,” he said. “Seeing a crash like that — it can be dramatic and traumatic. You’re just horrified at what those kinds of impacts have.”
He added that moments like those can trigger emotional shock, not just for the athlete but for loved ones watching helplessly.
No Return To The Olympic Village
According to her father, Vonn will not return to the Olympic venue to support teammates or attend events once she is cleared to travel.
“No,” Kildow said. “She’s not in that kind of situation. She’ll be going home at an appropriate point in time.”
Officials from U.S. Ski and Snowboard confirmed she remains under expert medical care and emphasized that recovery will take time.
A Career Defined By Defying Limits
Vonn’s Olympic crash comes just one season after an improbable comeback . She returned to competition last year after nearly six years away from the circuit and following partial titanium replacement surgery in her right knee.
Despite the risks, she delivered one of the most impressive late-career runs in skiing history — winning two downhills, finishing on the podium in seven of eight World Cup races she completed, and placing fourth in the other.
She owns 12 World Cup victories in Cortina alone and sits second on the all-time women’s World Cup wins list, trailing only Mikaela Shiffrin .
Brutal Sport, Brutal Reality
Anouk Patty, chief of sport for U.S. Ski and Snowboard, summed up the moment with a sobering reminder.
“She’ll be okay, but it’s going to be a bit of a process,” Patty said. “This sport’s brutal, and people need to remember that these athletes are throwing themselves down a mountain at incredible speeds.”
As Lindsey Vonn begins another long recovery, her father’s words reflect a growing reality: even legends are not immune to the unforgiving nature of alpine skiing — and this crash may finally force the sport’s most relentless competitor to let go.
