Tune in to what your body is telling you and how to transition to a workout routine that feels good and gets results. Movement should make you feel good about yourself, not like a punishment. But somewhere between bootcamp culture, endless HIIT sessions and the pressure to "earn" your rest, many of us have stopped tuning in to how our bodies actually feel. The truth? Your body is always talking. And if you're feeling flat, sore, stuck or simply unmotivated, it might be time to switch things up. Here are five signs your body could be ready for a new way to move. 1. You feel worse after working out Exercise should leave you feeling energised, not depleted. If you're constantly wiped out, sore for days, or dreading your next session, your body might be sending up a flare. According to the Australian Government's Physical Activity Guidelines, movement should support overall wellbeing, not cause harm or excessive fatigue. High-intensity workouts without proper recovery can push your body into stress mode, disrupting hormones and energy levels. If that post-workout buzz has turned into a slump, consider shifting to lower-impact, circulation-boosting movement instead. "Physical activity should feel good, not force you to push through pain, fatigue or stress." — Australian Government, Physical Activity Guidelines A workout shouldn’t push you into stress mode. Sometimes the smartest move is slowing down. (iStock) 2. You're not seeing results, even with effort You're showing up, sweating it out, but nothing's shifting. When your routine is too intense, your body can struggle to recover, leading to stalled progress. Low-impact, targeted movement can help stimulate stubborn areas by working with your body's natural systems, not against them. Think quality over quantity. Smarter, not harder. HYPOXI Master Trainer Kristy Duke says HYPOXI is one such method. "HYPOXI combines gentle movement with vacuum and compression technology," she explains. "This supports circulation, lymphatic flow and fat metabolism, helping you stay active without tipping into burnout." 3. You're constantly sore, stiff or injured Recurring aches, strains or niggles are signs your body isn't bouncing back. These can be warning signs that your workouts are too intense, too frequent, or not aligned with what your body needs right now. A 2021 report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that overuse injuries are common in high-intensity workouts and a leading cause of inactivity in women aged 30 to 49. Lower-impact alternatives such as walking, swimming or guided sessions with a qualified professional can reduce joint strain while still keeping you active and strong. Even on the tired days, small moments of movement can shift everything. (iStock) 4. Your motivation has disappeared If your workout feels like a chore, or you're constantly talking yourself into it, your body (and your brain) might be craving a new rhythm. Enjoyment is a major predictor of exercise consistency. You're more likely to stick with a workout routine when it feels good, fits your lifestyle and gives you energy rather than taking it away. Swapping a punishing sweat session for a 30-minute walk or a low-resistance ride, or even something completely new, can lift your mood, improve circulation and help reset your relationship with movement. 5. Your sleep, stress or hormones feel out of sync Overtraining can spike cortisol levels (your body's stress hormone), which can throw sleep, mood and metabolism out of balance. The Department of Health and Aged Care recommends balancing aerobic and resistance training with rest, recovery and gentle movement to support hormonal health and long-term wellbeing. This is where low-intensity methods may also help. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your body is to listen. If you're tired, sore, stuck or simply craving a gentler way forward, there's pivoting your routine may help. And who knows, both you and your body might love it. HYPOXI offers women a gentle alternative to high-intensity workouts. This low-impact method combines movement with vacuum and compression technology to stimulate circulation and support fat metabolism, especially in stubborn areas like the hips, stomach, bottom and thighs.
