Discover why Hakuba Valley is Japan’s premier luxury ski destination, with ten resorts, seamless transport, premium lodging and one powerful lift pass
Snow falls softly on cedar forests, steam curls from open-air hot springs and jagged alpine peaks glow pink at sunset. Just a few hours from Tokyo , in the Japanese Alps of Nagano Prefecture, Hakuba Valley unfolds as Japan’s most versatile, scenic and sophisticated ski destination.
Famed for its deep powder, long winter season and dramatic mountain scenery, Hakuba Valley blends world-class skiing with the refinement, efficiency and hospitality Japan does best. For Australian travellers planning a luxury ski holiday in Japan, Hakuba offers the rare combination of scale, reliability and cultural depth – all within easy reach of the capital.
Home to 10 interconnected ski resorts , an integrated shuttle bus network and a growing collection of high-end accommodation, Hakuba Valley delivers both adventure on the slopes and indulgence off them. Here, days are spent carving through dry Japanese powder, and evenings end in mineral-rich onsen baths or candlelit izakaya dinners in snow-dusted villages.

Ski Hakuba Valley: 10 resorts, one lift pass
One of the biggest advantages of skiing in Hakuba Valley is the flexibility of the Hakuba Valley Day Pass . This single lift pass provides access to 10 ski resorts across the region, making the Hakuba Valley one of the most diverse ski areas in Japan.
The participating resorts include Hakuba Happo-One Snow Resort, ABLE Hakuba GORYU, Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park, Tsugaike Mountain Resort, Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field, Hakuba Norikura Onsen Snow Resort and Hakuba Cortina Snow Resort, along with family-friendly areas such as Jigatake Snow Resort, Kashimayari Ski Resort Family Park and White Resort HAKUBA SANOSKA.
For advanced skiers, Hakuba Happo-One is the most iconic, having hosted alpine skiing events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. It offers long, challenging runs and impressive vertical terrain. ABLE Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47 connect across the mountain, combining varied pistes with terrain parks and even night skiing at ABLE Hakuba GORYU. Hakuba Cortina is known for deep powder days after storms, while Tsugaike Mountain Resort offers wide, open slopes and consistent snow coverage.
Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field stands out for its scenery and facilities. Set on a ridge with sweeping views of the Northern Alps, it pairs intermediate-friendly terrain with one of the most photogenic viewpoints in the region. The newly renewed Iwatake Base Centre has modernised the guest experience with contemporary design, streamlined rental services and upgraded amenities.
The Hakuba Valley Day Pass encourages skiers to explore multiple mountains during their stay. Instead of committing to one resort, visitors can move between ski areas depending on snow conditions, weather and mood, creating a varied and rewarding ski holiday.

Getting to Hakuba Valley and around the resorts
Despite its dramatic alpine setting, Hakuba Valley is remarkably accessible. From central Tokyo, the journey takes around three hours via the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano , followed by a direct express bus into Hakuba.
Most travellers arrive at the Happo Bus Terminal, the valley’s main transport hub. From here, the Hakuba Valley shuttle bus system connects all 10 ski resorts and key accommodation areas.
During peak winter periods, shuttle buses run as frequently as every 15 minutes. Access to the shuttle network is included with the Hakuba Valley Day Pass, allowing skiers to travel between mountains without the need for a rental car. Heated buses, clear signage and reliable schedules make moving around Hakuba straightforward even for first-time visitors.
The Hakuba Valley also boasts one of the longest ski seasons in Japan, typically running from early December through early May. This extended season allows for early winter powder skiing and premium spring skiing during Japan’s Golden Week holidays, when sunshine and softer snow create ideal cruising conditions.
Ongoing investment continues to enhance the guest experience, including expanded night skiing terrain at ABLE Hakuba GORYU and upgraded base facilities across the valley.
Luxury accommodation, Après-Ski and lifestyle in the Hakuba Valley
Hakuba Valley is as much about lifestyle as it is about skiing. Traditional alpine culture and modern luxury coexist in a way that feels distinctly Japanese.
In the historic Happo area, classic ryokan inns offer tatami rooms, seasonal kaiseki cuisine and soothing onsen hot springs. After a full day skiing, soaking in an outdoor bath while snow falls quietly around you is one of Hakuba’s most memorable rituals.
Echoland provides the valley’s contemporary après-ski energy. This lively district is filled with international restaurants, stylish cocktail bars and late-night venues, creating a social scene that attracts visitors from around Japan and the rest of the world. It’s here that Hakuba’s global reputation is most visible, with a cosmopolitan atmosphere set against a snowy alpine backdrop.
Luxury accommodation has expanded significantly in recent years. High-end chalets and premium condominiums now feature spacious living areas, underfloor heating, designer interiors and private shuttle services to ski lifts. Many properties also offer concierge services, private chefs and tailored ski arrangements, aligning Hakuba with leading luxury ski destinations worldwide.
The result is a ski holiday that balances deep powder and mountain adventure with comfort, culture and culinary discovery.
Discover the magic of the Hakuba Valley today.
