5 Best Dishwasher Detergents to Avoid Gut Health Issues - Women's Fitness & Style × About Me Contact Me 5 Best Dishwasher Detergents to Avoid Gut Health Issues Please assign a menu from Appearance -> Menus Life Changes 5 Best Dishwasher Detergents to Avoid Gut Health Issues July 3, 2025 by Nicole 8 These are my honest opinions. This post is promoted by Clean People. Did you know almost all dishwasher detergents contain harmful ingredients that can do serious damage to your health? Many dishwasher detergents contain chemicals like Alcohol Ethoxylates (known to cause gut health issues), Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach–known to cause gut health issues), 1,4-Dioxane (linked to cancer and GI damage), SLS, SLES, Phthalates, Formaldehyde…the list goes on. You wouldn’t drink harsh chemicals, so why are you letting them wash your dishes? I decided to try dozens of dishwasher detergents WITHOUT these harmful chemicals. Here are the 5 best! SPOILER ALERT: The #1 Pick is CLEAN PEOPLE Dishwasher Detergent Pods . They clean great, are mess-free, and are made with no harsh chemicals, no alcohol ethoxylates, no synthetic fragrances. I made the switch to Clean People in my home, and I never looked back! 1. CLEAN PEOPLE Dish Pods I wish I found Clean People dishwasher detergent pods sooner! These pods were my top pick by far, earning 5 stars ★★★★★ . Not only did they cut through tough grease and sticky food residue, but they did all that WITHOUT any harsh chemicals–meaning they won’t cause any gut issues. Clean People uses simple ingredients: NO bleach, 1,4-Dioxane, alcohol ethoxylates, SLS, SLES, synthetic dyes, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, or parabens. Plus, there’s no mess! The pods are pre-measured and work in all dishwashers (and they’re even septic system safe!) Their packaging uses up to 60% less plastic than other dishwasher detergent brands, the pods take about 50% less energy to produce. This means Clean People produces far lower CO2 emissions too. Not only is using Clean People pods safer for your health, it’s also better for the environment! Clean People is definitely my #1 recommendation, and what I use at home. Buy it here. UPDATE: Clean People has a Buy 1 Get 1 FREE Dish SOAP still live right now, use coupon code DISHES. This special BOGO deal is only available on their official website. It’s not available on Amazon or anywhere else. 2. Nellie’s Nellie’s Dish Cubes came in second place. We love that this dishwasher detergent is made without harsh ingredients like chlorine bleach, synthetic dyes, and other phthalates or parabens. These dish cubes are a new way to do dishes, and are the cutest little squares. They are a little pricey on a price per load but it was so fun to try this new type. The cleaning power and less toxic ingredients landed Nellie’s at #2. Buy it here. 3. Molly’s Suds Molly’s Suds comes in at #3! These pods are made without harsh chemicals. We love that this dishwasher detergent is made without harsh ingredients like chlorine bleach, synthetic dyes, and other phthalates or parabens. Instead, Molly’s Suds uses plant-based surfactants & naturally-occurring enzymes. It is a little messy with the powder plume. Buy it here . 4. Seventh Generation After hearing about Seventh Generation’s popularity among the “clean living” crowd, I was excited to try it. I am, however, ranking it at #4. It definitely cleaned my dishes and didn’t leave any residue, but I just can’t get past the liquid format. Liquid detergent is just too messy–it gets everywhere, is way too sticky, and you never know if you’re pouring too much or too little. The positive is that there are no harmful chemicals and the ingredients are plant based! I just personally don’t like to deal with a heavy plastic jug of diluted liquid. Some people do swear by it, though. Buy it here . 5. Dirty Labs Finally, coming in at #5 is Dirty Labs Dishwasher Detergent. The ingredients are natural and work great! I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about Dirty Labs’ cleaning power. The biggest negative for me was just the powder format. Unlike the pods, this detergent comes in loose powder that definitely gets everywhere and is hard to measure. Although powder is definitely a step above liquid, the high price is what brought Dirty Labs to #5. Being the most expensive for less detergent, I couldn’t justify the price when there were better options. Buy it here . And the winner is… The winner is CLEAN PEOPLE ! Simple ingredients that WON’T damage your health, powerful cleaning power, multiple scent options, and less damage to the environment than other options. It doesn’t get better than that! CYBER MONDAY ALERT 🚨: You can get a FREE bottle of dish soap when you buy a pack of Clean People Dishwasher Detergent Pods. #1 CLEAN PEOPLE: Buy It Here #2 Nellies: Buy It Here #3 Molly’s Suds: Buy it Here #4 Seventh Generation: Buy it Here #5 Dirty Labs: Buy it Here Nicole 8 July 3, 2025 8 Comments Drew says: November 25, 2025 at 2:03 pm I’ve used Clean People Dish detergent for 5 months now and can’t say enough good things! Even my husband likes loading the dishwasher now. Reply Nicole says: November 25, 2025 at 4:03 pm Haha, this is great to hear! My family loves our Clean People dish pods too. I’m never going back to traditional toxic detergent! Kristy says: November 15, 2025 at 1:24 pm Does non-toxic dishwasher detergent actually get your dishes clean, though? I find that hard to believe. Reply Nicole says: November 16, 2025 at 12:04 pm I hear you–I was skeptical at first too! And I’ll be honest, not ALL “clean” dishwasher detergents actually cut through grease and tough residue. That’s why I only use Clean People dishwasher pods in my home now! They get my dishes super clean without the toxic chemicals. Barb says: November 1, 2025 at 1:46 pm Any tips on what to look out for on dish detergent ingredient labels to avoid gut issues? Reply Nicole says: November 2, 2025 at 2:44 pm Great question! The big three ingredients to avoid are: Alcohol Ethoxylates, Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach), and 1,4-Dioxane (this causes cancer, too). I definitely recommend Clean People’s Dishwasher Detergent pods–they’re completely free from all those gut issue-causing chemicals!
