He spent $200 a month at the car wash for 3 years, Then he saw how his neighbor did it for $0, He hasn't gone back since
By Michael Delorme | Automotive Lifestyle Editor | March 13, 2026

Ray Dawson has owned a black truck for as long as anyone in his neighborhood can remember. Right now it's a 2021 Ford F-150 Lariat — his third black truck in a row.
"People ask me why I keep buying black," Ray told me from his driveway in Phoenix, Arizona. "Because nothing looks better clean. A clean black truck is the best-looking thing on the road. "
The problem? In Phoenix, a clean black truck lasts about 48 hours.
Desert dust, road grime, pollen in the spring, bird droppings in the summer — Ray's truck was dirty again by Tuesday every time he washed it on Sunday.
So he went to the car wash. Twice a week. $25 each time. Every week. For three years.
"I didn't think about it," he said. "It was just part of the routine. Like gas. "
Until his wife Carol did the math.
"Do You Know How Much You Spend on Car Washes?"
Carol wasn't trying to start a fight. She was going through their credit card statement for taxes and noticed a pattern.
$25. $25. $25. $25. Twice a week. Every week.
"She looked at me and said, 'Ray. This is $200 a month. That's $2,400 a year. You've been doing this for three years. That's over seven thousand dollars on car washes.'"
Ray didn't believe it. He pulled up the statements himself. She was right.
$7,200 on car washes in three years. For a truck that was dirty again 48 hours later.
But that wasn't even the worst part.
What the Car Wash Is Actually Doing to Your Paint
Ray loved his truck's finish. That deep, glossy black that turns heads in a parking lot. But over the past year, he'd noticed something:
Swirl marks. Fine scratches visible in direct sunlight. The kind you can't unsee once you notice them.
"I thought it was just aging," Ray said. "The truck is four years old. I figured that's normal."
It's not. Those swirl marks come from automatic car washes — the spinning brushes that don't get cleaned between vehicles, the recycled water full of grit from the car before you, the high-pressure jets at wrong angles.
Every $25 wash was slowly grinding his paint.
He started noticing it on the hood first. Then the doors. Then the tailgate. In direct Arizona sun, his truck looked like someone had rubbed it with fine sandpaper.
"I was paying $200 a month to damage my own truck, " Ray said. "And I didn't even know it."
"I'll Just Wash It Myself"
_article]:gp-aspect-[var(--aspect)] tablet:[&_>_article]:gp-aspect-[var(--aspect-tablet,_var(--aspect))] mobile:[&_>_article]:gp-aspect-[var(--aspect-mobile,_var(--aspect-tablet,_var(--aspect)))] gp-relative" style="--bs:none;--bw:1px 1px 1px 1px;--bc:var(--g-c-line-3, line-3);--d:block;--d-mobile:block;--d-tablet:block;--op:100%;--pageType:GP_STATIC;--bblr:0px;--bbrr:0px;--btlr:0px;--btrr:0px;--mb:20px;--mb-mobile:20px;--mb-tablet:20px;--aspect:auto;--aspect-mobile:auto">
That was the obvious solution. Buy some microfiber towels, a good car soap, and wash it in the driveway.
One problem: Ray's house in Phoenix doesn't have an outdoor faucet on the driveway side. The only spigot is on the back wall, near the patio.
So the routine looked like this:
Drag the garden hose 80 feet around the side of the house — 10 minutes of wrestling with kinks
Hook up the spray nozzle, test for leaks — 5 minutes
Wash the truck (soap, rinse, soap, rinse) — 30 minutes
Dry it before the Arizona sun bakes water spots into the paint — 15 minutes
Roll up the hose, drag it back — 10 minutes
Total: over an hour. In 110°F heat. Twice a week.
Ray did it three times. Then he went back to the car wash.
"I told Carol, 'I'd rather pay $25 than have a heatstroke in the driveway,'" he said. " She didn't argue. "
His buddy at the fire station suggested a pressure washer. Ray looked into it. A decent one runs $300–$500. Weighs 30–50 lbs. Needs a direct faucet hookup — the same faucet Ray doesn't have on his driveway side. And even if he did, the setup alone — dragging it out of the garage, connecting the hose, priming the pump, rolling it all back when you're done — takes 15 minutes before you even start washing.
"So my options were: pay $25 to get my paint scratched, spend an hour in 110-degree heat with a garden hose, or buy a $400 machine that weighs more than my toolbox and still needs the faucet I don't have," Ray said. " None of those are real options. "
Here's what the alternatives look like side by side:
"You're Still Going to the Car Wash?"
_article]:gp-aspect-[var(--aspect)] tablet:[&_>_article]:gp-aspect-[var(--aspect-tablet,_var(--aspect))] mobile:[&_>_article]:gp-aspect-[var(--aspect-mobile,_var(--aspect-tablet,_var(--aspect)))] gp-relative" style="--bs:none;--bw:1px 1px 1px 1px;--bc:var(--g-c-line-3, line-3);--d:block;--d-mobile:block;--d-tablet:block;--op:100%;--pageType:GP_STATIC;--bblr:0px;--bbrr:0px;--btlr:0px;--btrr:0px;--mb:20px;--mb-mobile:20px;--mb-tablet:20px;--aspect:auto;--aspect-mobile:auto">
That's what Ray's neighbor Mike said one Saturday morning, watching Ray pull out of the driveway.
Mike was in his own driveway, washing his black Chevy Silverado. No hose. No faucet hookup. Just a bucket of water on the ground and something small in his hand. Ray stopped the truck.
"How long does that take you?" Ray asked.
Mike looked at his watch. " Twelve minutes. I'm almost done. "
Ray stared at the truck. Soap foam running off. Paint gleaming. No swirl marks. No water spots. " Seese Pro Washer, " Mike said. "Cordless. Runs off a battery.
You just drop the hose in a bucket and go. I haven't been to a car wash in four months."

The Specs That Made Ray Pay Attention
the specs that made ray pay attention
Ray went home and looked it up. For a guy who'd spent $7,200 at the car wash, the spec sheet read like a joke — in the best possible way:
