Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

Whether it’s a routine check-up and cleaning or a last-minute root canal, dental care isn’t cheap. That’s why the launch of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is welcome news for millions of Canadians. It’s designed to improve access to dental care for those who don’t have individual coverage, but what does it actually cover? Who is eligible for it? And how does it compare to personal or individual health insurance? Let’s answer some common questions and cover everything you need to know so you can make the best decision for your own dental health.
Who’s eligible for the CDCP?
To qualify for this new plan, you need to check a few boxes. You could be eligible if you don’t have access to individual or group insurance, you’re a Canadian resident for tax purposes and have filed a recent Canadian income tax return, and your adjusted family net income is under $90,000. If that sounds like your situation, you may be eligible to apply .
What does the CDCP cover?
The plan includes coverage for a wide range of dental services including preventive and diagnostic care like exams, cleanings, and x-rays, as well as basic treatments like fillings, root canals, gum care, and tooth extractions. It provides coverage for major services like crowns, dentures, and oral surgery, plus orthodontics if it’s deemed medically necessary.
While the CDCP is a great start, there are a few important details to be aware of. Annual re-application is required, meaning you’ll need to provide updated income info every year to stay eligible. Also, it’s not fully free. Depending on your income, you may be responsible for 40-60% of your dental costs, plus any additional fees if your dentist’s fees exceed government rates (this is known as balance billing).
It’s also important to note that coverage focuses on basic dental care , and there’s limited coverage for preventive care.
How does it stack up against individual health insurance?
The CDCP coverage is quite basic, so if you’re looking for broader coverage and long-term support, individual health insurance may be the better option for you. Here’s a quick comparison between the CDCP and Blue Cross Health insurance:
What does Blue Cross Health ® Insurance include?
Think of Blue Cross Health insurance as your all-in-one plan for everyday health needs, not just dental. With Blue Cross Health, you’ll get up to 80% dental reimbursement, coverage for prescription drugs, vision care, massage therapy, and mental wellness. You’ll also get access to helpful extras like:
inConfidence® , which is confidential support for legal, financial, and emotional matters, and
Blue Advantage® for discounts on health and wellness products.
Essentially, it’s a plan designed to give you flexibility, confidence, and control, whether you’re self-employed, between jobs, or simply want more complete coverage.
We’ve got you covered
The CDCP is a long-awaited, big step forward in making dental care more accessible, but much like any government program, it’s not for everyone. If you’re looking for coverage that goes beyond the basics, Blue Cross Health insurance can help fill in the gaps to make sure you’re properly covered.
