The single most expensive mistake media buyers make is keeping a winning ad on too long. The second most expensive mistake is killing a winning ad too early because of statistical noise. The difference between the two is whether you have a framework for distinguishing genuine fatigue from short-term variance — and most operators don't, which is why their CPMs creep up and their CPAs slowly drift away from profitable while they wait for the ad to "rebound."

What "creative fatigue" actually means

The term is used loosely. Three distinct phenomena get conflated under the "fatigue" label:

The aggregate distribution of native-ad lifespan in our corpus, summarized:

  • Approximately 30% of creatives have a corpus-observed lifespan of less than 7 days. These are typically test creatives that the advertiser killed quickly because they didn't work.
  • Approximately 35% of creatives have a lifespan of 7-30 days. These are the typical "test, scale, fade" pattern.

Two notes about this distribution. First, "lifespan" in the corpus is the time from first-observed to last-observed, not the time from first-launched to last-served.
