Demand Real Protection for Australian Marine Parks Skip to content DONATE get industrial fishing out of Australia's marine parks This June is a once-in-a decade chance for the Australian Government to turn more of our marine parks into true ocean sanctuaries. SIGN NOW Sign Petition Call on the Australian Government to fully protect Australia's marine parks by banning extractive industries like industrial fishing. supporters have signed needed to reach Oceans | Marine Parks | PET By signing this petition you give permission for Greenpeace Australia Pacific to contact you with campaign updates. Your information is safe and secure with us – for more information please see our Participant Collection Notice and Privacy Policy . OUR OCEAN LIFE NEEDS fully protected sanctuaries You would think a marine park would be protected. But, over half of Australia's marine parks allow industrial activities like bottom trawling and longlining. Violently catching any animal in their path, including turtles, seals and dolphins. Australia has the largest marine parks network in the world covering 52% of our waters. But in more than half of these areas the most destructive industries known to humankind are allowed to fish, trawl, dig and mine using barbaric and cruel methods. Longliners and bottom trawlers pillage underwater wonderlands, rip up coral and indiscriminately and violently catch any animal in their path, including turtles, seals and dolphins, all within the areas designed to protect wildlife. The destruction is gruesome, and it’s happening inside so-called “protected” areas. Sign now to get industrial fishing out of our marine parks. Greenpeace Australia Pacific took action to stop an industrial longlining fishing operation in the South Pacific Ocean, seizing more than 20 kilometers of fishing gear and freeing nine sharks, including an endangered mako, near Australia and New Zealand. SIGN THE PETITION NOW Together we can protect Australia’s iconic and precious ocean life This June is a once-in-a-decade chance to create a powerful, connected ocean sanctuary network - from our coastline all the way to the high seas. Australia's marine parks should be safe havens for ocean life, free from industrial activities where they can recover and thrive and safely travel out into the high seas. Greenpeace is calling on the Australian government to: Strengthen Australia’s Marine Parks Network Get extractive industries like industrial fishing out of marine parks, and expand the amount of fully-protected sanctuaries within the network. Expand Australia’s Marine Parks Network Increase the size of Australia’s marine parks network. Connect Australia’s Marine Parks Network to the High Seas Create seascape connectivity by linking Australian marine parks to high seas ocean sanctuaries.
